The Kentucky sports wagering legislation is headed to the governor’s office for his approval. The legislation, which would permit sports betting in the state, passed the Senate just before the deadline. Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, has stated he will sign the legislation, making legal sports wagering in Kentucky a reality.
The legislation was approved by a vote of 26-12, surpassing the required 23 votes. The two-thirds majority requirement was necessary due to state regulations for revenue-generating legislation passed during non-budget sessions.
“After years of urging lawmakers to legalize sports betting, we finally achieved it!” Beshear declared on Twitter. “Kentuckians will soon be able to place bets here, and for the first time, we will retain those funds to support our roads and bridges, schools, and communities.”
