A collective of persons has been detained in Wales concerning a probe into game manipulation involving a fixture in the Cymru Premier from the previous season. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) initially flagged unusual wagering activity connected to a match between Port Talbot Town and Rhyl on the 9th of April to the Gambling Commission’s Sports Betting Intelligence Unit. This triggered a collaborative endeavor between the FAW and the Gambling Commission to furnish the South Wales Police with relevant data. The inquiry, spearheaded by the South Wales Police Economic Crime Unit, culminated in the apprehension of ten individuals, comprising seven males and three females. Although the precise details of their alleged participation remain confidential, it is noteworthy that no athletes have been linked to the match-rigging plot thus far. Jonathan Ford, the Chief Executive of the FAW, underscored the cooperative essence of the investigation and the FAW’s dedication to preserving probity in Welsh football. He emphasized the FAW’s continuous integrity education initiative, implemented since 2014, and their comprehensive surveillance and reporting mechanisms, both of which played a role in the detentions. It’s significant to acknowledge that ESSA, an organization representing sports wagering providers, documented a sum of five dubious warnings related to football in the initial six months of 2016, illustrating the persistent obstacles encountered in the fight against match manipulation.
